How many days should you spend in Alicante?

Updated July 2026

Locals' answer: 3 days. That's the point where Alicante stops feeling like a stopover and starts feeling like a trip — enough time to see the city, hit a real beach and squeeze in one day trip.

Here's what each duration actually gets you, from a 6-hour cruise stop to a full week. Full daily plans in the Alicante itinerary.

1 day (cruise / stopover)

  • Explanada de España walk → Old Town (El Barrio) → free elevator up to Santa Bárbara castle.
  • Lunch: arroz a banda or paella at a bodega near the Central Market.
  • If time: 45-min swim at Postiguet before returning.
  • Verdict: fine, but you'll miss the best of Alicante.

2 days (weekend)

  • Day 1: Old Town, castle, sunset from the walls, tapas in El Barrio.
  • Day 2: TRAM L1 to Playa de San Juan for the morning, return for lunch, MARQ museum or Central Market in the afternoon.
  • Verdict: solid city-break. Miss the day trips.

3 days (recommended)

  • Day 3: Boat to Tabarca island (April–October) or bus to Guadalest.
  • Verdict: this is when Alicante clicks. Add-on any longer is a bonus.

5 days (base for the region)

  • Add Elche (palm grove + basilica), Altea (white village), a hike in Cabo de las Huertas or Serra Gelada.
  • One slow day: no plans, one beach, one long lunch, one aperitivo.

7+ days (beach holiday or slow travel)

Sleep in San Juan or Muchavista, use the TRAM to come into the city 2–3 evenings. Rent a car for one day for Guadalest + Fuentes del Algar waterfalls. Alicante works perfectly for remote work in low season.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day in Alicante enough?

For a stopover, yes: castle, Old Town, Explanada, one long lunch. But you'll leave wanting more. Two nights is the practical minimum.

Is Alicante worth 3 days?

Yes — 3 days is the sweet spot. Day 1 city, day 2 beach + tapas, day 3 Tabarca or Guadalest. You leave rested, not rushed.

Is 5 days too many in Alicante?

Not if you use it as a base. Add Elche palm grove, Altea's white village and either Benidorm skyline or a hike in the Serra Gelada. Perfect for slow travellers or families.

How many days do I need in Alicante for a beach holiday?

5–7 nights minimum in San Juan or Playa de Muchavista. The centre is fine but the city beach is small — for real beach time, sleep near the tram line north.

How long to stay in Alicante with kids?

4 nights. Two beach mornings, castle + boat to Tabarca, and Terra Mítica or Elche palm grove as a day trip.

Alicante or Benidorm — which as a base?

Alicante if you want a real city + easy beaches. Benidorm if the sole priority is beach + resort. Both are 45 min apart on the TRAM L1.
