Is Alicante worth visiting? A local's honest answer

Updated July 2026

Short answer: yes. Alicante is one of the sunniest and most affordable city-breaks in Spain — 300+ days of sun a year, a walkable historic centre, a real urban beach a 5-minute walk from the old town, and a castle on a rock with one of the best views on the Mediterranean.

It's not Barcelona or Seville. There's no world-famous museum and the "wow" moments are smaller and slower: an aperitivo in El Barrio, a plate of arroz a banda, the sunset from Santa Bárbara. If that sounds like your kind of trip, keep reading.

Why Alicante is worth the trip

  • Weather. Mild winters (15–20°C daytime average in January), hot dry summers, sea temperature usable May–October.
  • Real city, real beach. Playa del Postiguet is inside the city. You can be in the sea 8 minutes after stepping off the tram at Luceros.
  • The castle. Free to walk up, free elevator from Postiguet, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, no queues.
  • The Old Town (El Barrio). Steep painted streets, tiled façades, tapas bars that fill up by 22:00.
  • Cheap. Set-menu lunches 12–18 €, beers 2–3 €, tram to San Juan beach 1.45 €.
  • Easy arrival. Direct flights from most European capitals. Airport is 20 min from the centre by bus C6 (4 €).
  • Great base. Tabarca island, Guadalest, Elche palm grove, Altea, Benidorm — all under 1h30 away.

What to skip / manage expectations

  • Museums. MARQ is solid but you won't come to Alicante for museums.
  • August. Hot, crowded, expensive, no reservation = no beach umbrella. Come May–June or September–October if you can.
  • Beach = Postiguet is small. For a long sandy beach take the TRAM L1/L3 to Playa de San Juan (25 min).
  • Nightlife. It exists (El Barrio and puerto until late) but it's not Ibiza.

Who Alicante is for

  • City-breakers who want sun in winter without long-haul flights.
  • Families — safe, walkable, beach in the city, plenty of playgrounds.
  • Retirees and remote workers — mild climate, cheap rentals, direct flights.
  • Couples looking for a quiet, sunny 3–4 nights that isn't Barcelona.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alicante worth visiting for a weekend?

Absolutely. Two nights is enough for the Old Town, Santa Bárbara castle, the Postiguet and Explanada, plus one long lunch of arroz. If you can, add a third day for Tabarca island or a day trip to Guadalest.

Is Alicante better than Valencia or Málaga?

Different, not better. Alicante is smaller, cheaper, sunnier in winter and easier to walk. Valencia wins on museums and food scene, Málaga on nightlife and Picasso. For sun + beach + relaxed pace at short notice, Alicante is the easiest pick.

Is Alicante safe for tourists?

Yes. Violent crime is rare and the historic centre, El Barrio and the seafront are safe to walk at night. Usual pickpocket precautions apply on the tram, in the market and on the beach.

Is Alicante expensive?

One of the cheapest coastal cities in Spain. A menú del día runs 12–18 €, a decent 3★ hotel in low season 55–80 €/night, tram tickets 1.45 €. Only July–August peak rates get uncomfortable.

Do people speak English in Alicante?

In hotels, main restaurants and the airport, yes. In neighbourhood bars and buses, basic Spanish helps. Menus in the centre are usually translated.

What's the one thing not to miss?

Sunset from the walls of Castillo de Santa Bárbara looking down at the Postiguet — free, unbeatable, and 15 minutes from the tram stop MARQ-Castillo.
