The Alicante TRAM: the line tourists actually need

L1 runs from Luceros up the coast to Benidorm — the long-distance line. L3 covers Luceros to Campello, and L4 serves Playa de San Juan and the university area. For most visitors, L1 and L3 do everything.

In the city the tram runs underground; the central stops are Luceros, Mercado and Marq-Castillo. Once past the centre it surfaces and follows the coast.

The network is zoned: the city and Playa de San Juan sit in the inner zones, Campello a little further out, and Benidorm several zones away. You buy for the zones you cross, from machines at every station.

If you plan several trips, a rechargeable card works out cheaper per journey than single tickets. Validate before boarding — inspections do happen, and an unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket.

• Luceros → Playa de San Juan: about 25 minutes.
• Luceros → El Campello: about 35 minutes.
• Luceros → Benidorm: roughly 1h15, with a change at Benidorm-bound services.

The Benidorm run is scenic — much of it is right along the coast — but it is a slow train rather than a fast link. Treat it as part of the day out.

Frequency is good during the day and thins out at night; there are limited late services, so check the last departure if you are eating in Campello or Benidorm.

Trams are step-free at most stations and take pushchairs and luggage easily. Bikes are allowed outside peak hours. In summer, the beach-bound trams around midday are the busiest of the day.
