Hogueras de San Juan: Alicante's biggest week

Neighbourhood commissions spend the year building hogueras: large sculptural monuments, often satirical, planted in squares and junctions across the city. They go up in the days before the fiesta and stand for less than a week.

On the night of 24 June they are burned, all at once, while the fire brigade hoses the crowd. That final act is the cremà, and it is what the whole year builds towards.

• 20 June: the plantà — monuments finished and standing overnight.
• 21–24 June: daily mascletà at 2pm in Plaza de los Luceros.
• 22–23 June: the flower offering to the Virgen del Remedio.
• 24 June: the cremà at midnight — everything burns.
• 25–29 June: firework contest on Postiguet beach.

At 2pm sharp, Plaza de los Luceros hosts a percussive gunpowder display designed to be felt rather than watched. It builds to a finale that vibrates through your chest. It is loud in a way photographs cannot convey.

Arrive 30–45 minutes early for a spot, keep your mouth slightly open to equalise pressure, and keep small children and nervous dogs well away.

Book accommodation months ahead — the city sells out and prices rise sharply. Expect road closures across the centre, diverted buses, and noise until dawn near the barracas, the fiesta marquees.

If you want the spectacle without the sleeplessness, stay in San Juan or Campello and come in on the TRAM, checking the last service back.

Hogueras is the peak, but not the only fiesta: Moors and Christians processions in nearby towns through spring and summer, Santa Faz pilgrimage after Easter, and Carnival in February all draw crowds.
